It has evolved. Social media has played a huge role as well as the extremes of each party controlling the direction of the party. Already bad, a big step change came in the 2016 election with Trump and his lack of any political filter with many of his followers embracing that approach and even trying to duplicate the style politically. Both parties are equally to blame but Trump's emergence was the biggest incremental step in that regard.
