There was a terrific book called "We the People, the Betrayal of American Democracy" written by William Grieder came out more than 30 yrs back. One thing he pointed out was the economic elevation of some in the media and the disconnect of media from the common man; that once it had been the case, Greider argues that beat reporters and most newsmen would frequent the same pubs as blue collar guys and they lives a shared life with shared interests. Once media figures started making major coin and frequenting tennis clubs - and oh gee marrying the chairman of the Fed then that connection was broken, and the connection no longer the same. Another KEY component was military service that men from Rhode Island served alongside those of Iowa and Nevada - in a collective cause. That bond too has been broken. Today, it is investment bankers pushing privatization of public education and buying up fast food joints and a sundry enterprises while having no connection to the communities served. Many causes here obviously, these but a few. And Rapacious Capitalism, a phrase I coined on this board 25 years ago - that had its role too, though today I reference this as SANSAD, Squeeze a Nickel, Squeeze a Dime. Anything for a buck.
