Myself, and found that it is similar to the singular/plural use of YOU.
That said, and my error acknowledged, a person who claims to be, "non-binary" is either a male or a female. They don't get to choose to be neither just because they are flucking crazy.
And while I do not believe that the use of, "his or her" is incorrect, clearly the singular use of they is not incorrect either.
I appreciate the grammar lesson.
