but I have since found out it is very common.
often cops give people a break at their discretion.
Nonetheless the crime is the crime.
Imagine cops pulling someone over for speeding.
Person A is contrite , says they are sorry for speeding and fully cooperates. Person B berates the cop, claims he is being persecuted and is an all around ass.

You would excuse person B and throw the book at A, depending on...well you know what.
