Canberra is the capital. Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, all on E coast, make up half of the 25m population. Perth on the W coast has 2 million more, then Adelaide on the S coast (but toward the E) - believe those are the only 5 cities over a million. I spent some time in AU about a decade ago - even on the W and S coasts, where everyone lives, it feels not that populated. The country is so new that public transportation was baked in - very easy to get around in the cities on rail or bus, but mostly, rail.
