Used by families to help make their food dollars go farther. When you grow up with them, you can develop a taste for it that persists all of your life. I grew up eating all of those because my dad did. One of his favorite snacks was braunschweiger on saltines with mayonnaise. At least that one never took.
Families usually don't brag about it, but most of our families lived in poverty 2 or 3 generations ago or even more recently than that. Immigrants didn't come here with much if anything. They ate what they could afford. WW2 vets got used to Spam because Hormel provided it to the military. Most were glad to get it. Before WW2, America wasn't as rich a country as we are now. After the war, our undamaged productive capacity, a culture that valued innovation and huge numbers of immigrants created wealth that persists to this day.
I still eat Spam.
