restaurants and they told me this themselves. All of them them survived Covid, but I was told repeatedly that regulars were showing up anyway but that the occasionals weren't coming anymore. When a restaurant can't predict how many people are coming, food costs become like a hammer. That's why many businesses pared down their menus during Covid or were constantly out of things. Food cost management is the number one thing that control profitability in a restaurant (aside from menu pricing and quality of food).
The other major issue? Finding employees who wanted to work in a Covid environment around people who didn't give a **** about masking. One of my buddies was waiting his own tables for a while.
For bars, people largely show up to commiserate or to get laid. You can't tell me that Covid didn't put a damper on that. Five dollar beers at the bar down the street are not as great when you're not drinking them to try and get in some chick's pants.
I own a business...we shifted to Zoom calls / teleconferences with clients when the restrictions went into effect, which was not all that long. We've never changed our policy because clients largely like the time savings of a phone conference or Zoom.
