polarization of the country. Pernicious polarization is defined as the division of society into mutually distrustful political camps in which political identity becomes a social identity and it trumps all other considerations.
It can end only four ways.
(1) balkanization of the country
(2) civil war
(3) move to more authortarian rule
(4) depolariztion at all levels. This is the least most likely outcome.
The current dynamics are corrosive and toxic to our democracy.
