If a majority of Republicans want him to be the nominee in 2024, he will win the primaries and get the nomination at the convention. If they don't, he won't. There doesn't need to be a sit-down and it's not a complicated proposition. There doesn't need to be a big divorce and a lot of drama.
My honest best guess based on nothing but my opinion is he will not go very far in the primaries unless the Democrats help him (which is certainly going to happen like it did with several GOP candidates in the primaries for the 2022 primaries). But this is all predicated on there being another good choice. I think there are several out there and I think a good number of them are going to run.
