you don't hire a Turner Gill, Barry Odom, Eli Drinkwitz, David Beaty, Ron Smart, and hope beyond hope that it pans out. Or Lovie Smith, a HC still getting HC'ing jobs in the NFL at 22 games below .500 for his career. In other words, hiring assistants who've never been a HC (and no, not counting one year at App St with Satterfield's roster) or a retread head coach. Now one could argue Kirby Smart, but UGA is a different animal with the resources and fertile recruiting ground, but I doubt Gill, Odom, Drink, Beaty, or Smart, even Lovie, would have the same success. Clearly Smart is HC material and was from the get-go.

You get a Pinkel, Klieman, Leipold, or Beilema and have success, although in time, Beilema will flame out and jury still out on Klieman and Leipold, but I'd take Leipold at Mizzou for opening kick, 2023.
