It's very contagious;
He's exposed to multiple persons daily;
Vaccinations don't seem to prevent it;
He likes to sniff people which may increase exposure....

Maybe it's an attempt to hide him for a few days or a week, but I'd think that if they're looking to oust him, they'll go with something more sympathetic, like cancer. Rarely do you hear anyone talk bad about people with cancer.
