their staffs know what the general end game is? The uncertainty has put the other conferences into scramble mode.
Clearly the biggest brands in Texas, Oklahoma and now USC and UCLA are now in the SEC and B1G respectively which weakened the Big XII and the PAC 12.
Do the two heavy weights stand pat at 16? That is the story going forward.
If Notre Dame joins the B1G (as many expect) things are going to get interesting. Does the B1G expand further? (as many expect) or drop a member to remain at 16 teams?
It is when the conferences expand past 16 teams (or not) that will indicate the direction tone and tenor going forward.
If the other conferences sense an implosion in their current conference or feel they can not compete going forward with the financial disparity these teams will voluntarily implode their own conferences or jump ship by themselves.
Teams like Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina , Virginia, Oregon, Washington have some hard generational choices ahead of them.
Football funds all the other sports (including women sports) with the exception of basketball and some baseball teams.
This is survival of the fittest.
.
To your point about would the SEC drop a current member? My gut instinct says no.
Having said that, if there is wholesale horse trading going on in a free for all smash and grab of other coveted teams your point is valid.
Finding out what the max number is per conference helps define the future shape of the semi pro ( ahem, college football) going forward.
