You have no idea how old I am. You shouldn't do that.
I appreciate you answering me.
I'm not DAR connected except by marriage, so my kids are. I was raised in Missouri. Went to Mizzou. My German relatives came to Missouri a decade before the Civil War. My English and Scottish relatives before then. There's Irish and Hungarian that came here a few generations ago.
If you're retired, you're old enough to remember Cold War politics and the history associated with it. More importantly, the whys are crucial to understand. I have acquaintances and friends that emigrated from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in the last 15 years. They're all good, hardworking people. We've talked about their countries, both the good and the bad. Ukraine is a work in progress, but made the decision to turn toward the West and modernize, which includes attacking corruption and developing trust and integrity to attract western capital. It's a slow process but required in order to get Western investment.
Russia has zigzagged and appears to still be mired in the control of the Bad Boss mentality, though more of its educated people now aspire to something better. I studied the Russian language starting in middle school and continued through college. That led me to study Russian history, culture and sociology. My interests in history have long ago outlived my fluency, which atrophied from lack of use and older age.
I'm conservative. The political left and and now even the middle of this country have started to develop a strong distrust of the far right because of their support of Russia and Putin. I've asked myself why and tried to learn more. Some of the answers aren't pretty. Some concerns are illogical. They need to be addressed as much as the actions of the far left which seeks to unravel of the very fabric of our country. We need to stand for something greater than ourselves and not just our own self-interest.
It's easy for all of us to have opinions. it's harder for all of us to do something about it in a constructive way. One of my friends has an elderly mother and father plus her sister in Ukraine. They are good people. I pray for them.
