USFs Corrick didn’t do much of anything, was she injured? She beat Miss St Friday in a so so performance (by her standards), then USF basically conceded the game yesterday against FSU, keeping her on the bench, and lost 8-0. Then in an elimination game yesterday, she pitched the first inning in the rematch with Miss St, was pulled and never pitched again. Miss St whipped them 6-0 to advance to today.

Boneheaded coach of the weekend so far? No question, Virginia Techs Pete D’Amour. He tried to get cute with his AA ace Rochard and got burned. He pitched her on Friday in a game they could have easily won with their #2 pitcher, and sure, she threw a meaningless no hitter and struck out 17. Then yesterday, in the game they really needed, she was on the bench nearly the entire game against Kentucky, then came in and kicked the game away in the 7th inning as Kentucky pulled off a stunning upset. VT hit a grand slam in the 1st inning to take a 4-0 lead, then forgot how to hit the next 6 innings. Kentucky hit a HR in the 6th inning to pull to 4-1, then the VT pitcher gave up a single to lead off the 7th inning, and in comes Rochard. She gives up 2 singles as Kentucky pulls to a 4-2 deficit, then gives up a game winning 3 run HR in a 5-4 loss. Talk about having a game in hand and then kicking it away. Now VT has to beat Kentucky twice today to advance in a regional they were heavily favored to win.

13 seed Washington is feeling just as bad. Leading Texas 2-0 in the 6th inning with AA pitcher Gabby Plain cruising, she loads the bases with no outs, strikes out the next 2 hitters, looked like she was getting out of the inning, then an error and a bloop single bring in 3 runs and they are down 3-2. Texas adds 5 more in the 7th inning and crushes Washington 8-2.

And Michigan had 16 seed UCF beat, up 2-1, 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, 2 strikes on the hitter, one strike from the win, and UCF gets a clutch hit to tie the game, goes on to win 3-2 in 11 innings.

VT, Washington and Michigan had their winners bracket games all but won and now each of them needs to win 2 today to advance (Michigan needs to win 3 actually, has to beat the winner of a suspended game between Villanova and S. Dakota St first before a rematch with UCF).

And the strange case of Montana Fouts continued, as Stanford beat her 6-0 sending host Alabama to the losers bracket. I don’t think she’s injured but something is wrong there, doesn’t have the edge she had before. After both of our starters outpitched her recently, she gave up 3 runs in the 1st inning yesterday, 5 in total before getting pulled, and Bama got only 2 hits while getting shut out by Stanford’s ace Vawter.

And in the real stunner of the day, TAMU nearly beats Oklahoma, losing just 3-2. The Aggies then whipped Minnesota again last night to stay alive and advance to today.

Crazy day.
