Scores backed that up. They talk about this openly in that show. And if you look back at his career, the details kind of bear that out. He could pass the ball exceptionally well, but the nuances of the game could be an issue and he did not have the leadership and relatability skills of some of the other top quarterbacks. Some people like to say he never had any weapons, but Mark Clayton and Mark Duper were an amazing pair of wide receivers.
On the other side of that discussion, Elway was basically the exact opposite. He was smart, guys rallied around him like crazy, he had the ability to keep the play alive, but he was not actually a very good passer. He threw laser beams no matter what and he had a legit tendency to be high with his balls
If you had been able to combine Marino‘s passing with Elways mental side of the game, you would have ended up with somebody that could possibly compete with Montana.
