The 37-year-old Joyce has limited coaching experience – three years under Gates. He was a star at St. Vincent-St. Mary where he played for his father Dru Joyce II. He then played overseas for a decade.

Joyce is considered head coaching material, but does he need more experience to take over the Division I program? That will be the question. Joyce did a lot of recruiting for Gates.

Before joining Gates three seasons ago, Summers did two tours of duty as an assistant at James Madison. He also was a head coach at Urbana College. Summers coached the big men and had the “offensive coordinator” title.

Garrett said he’ll also look at outside candidates, including previous head coach.

Not sure if the 65-year-old Bruce Weber would be a possibility. But Garrett was part of the Kansas State athletic department during Weber’s tenure. Garrett has an excellent relationship with the coach, who just left Kansas State.

The names of other veteran head coaches are likely to emerge after the success Gates had at CSU.
