The US is being overly careful in my opinion to adhere to strict NATO protocols of non-engagement. Meanwhile, Russia will slowly add to the planes they have to attack Ukraine as they add from other locations or get other jets repaired. If Ukraine gets no more MiGs (which the Ukrainians have flown) then eventually there will be a shift back to Russian air dominance with bombs landing on civilian and military targets.
