“I remember I told Quin if they put us in the NIT, I wasn’t gonna play,” said Gilbert, ninth on Mizzou’s all-time scoring list. “I told everybody, ‘We ain’t planning to go play in the NIT.’ Quin said, ‘You’re crazy.’ … But we stayed together went on a good run. Unfortunately I had the worst shooting day of my career (against Oklahoma in the Elite Eight) and we didn’t go to the Final Four. But we were a great team. I think the most talented team in Missouri history with that five of me, Kareem, Rickey Paulding, A.J. (Arthur Johnson) and Travon (Bryant). Unfortunately we did’t get to the Final Four. Great memories, great people, good to be back.”
Gilbert lives in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Asked about the current state of the Mizzou program, the former guard said, “We’ve just got to get some stability in here. Cuonzo is a really nice guy and trying to do the best he can. You got to have some horses. I don’t care who you is. Coach K (Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski) is nothing without those horses. So first of all, you got to get some players. And I believe this is a start when guys like us come back. Try to get the fan base back, get some good players in here and I believe you can turn things around. It’s never good to see Mizzou not good.”
