You can be mentally tough and still not be capable of building a winning high level college basketball program, because it takes far more than mental toughness to succeed.
The Tigers beat a horrible 6 win Georgia team by 10 points at home on Senior day. That isn't a hallmark of success. 10 times they have lost games by 19 points or more.
If a basketball coach doesn't rebuild in the first 5 years, especially when he has tanked the program in year 5, there is no legitimate reason to believe he can rebuild the program going forward.
What can anyone show in how this year's roster, which is 100% Martin's roster, has performed against top 100 teams; such that he can do anything remotely close to sustaining a winning program, when he couldn't even find a single quality point guard willing to be on the team this year?
His argument for his retention is based on people skills, not building a basketball program. He is an utter failure at building a basketball program. He isn't paid $3 million a year just to make players mentally tough. That is just one of the many qualities he must display in building a basketball program.
He must go.
