The Russian Revolution of 1917 lead to the formation of the USSR in 1922. The USSR “dissolved” in the 1990’s. Putin was part of the USSR’s power structure.

Putin’s motivation is to recover as much, as many of the Republics as possible for Mother Russia. He views his historical legacy as “the man who put Russia back together”. Therefore, his first priority is the former USSR’s territory, but he will try grab any other territory he can. Doing so successfully only enhances his historical legacy in his eyes.
