Russia/Putin is intent on recapturing the territory/countries lost when the USSR broke up in the 1990's.
Some of the countries in the lost territory are now members of Nato, i.e. the Baltic Republics, Poland, etc. Nato is obligated to defend each member.
The Nato forces may not be sufficient to stop an all out Russian attack without using tactical nukes.
