I grew up in far northwest Missouri. It's farm country.
As a boy I was sitting with my father and several of his friends at a local cafe getting ready to eat lunch. An older local farmer known for his conservative spending habit ("so tight he squeaked when he walked" in the local jargon) came in, all smiles. He said "it's been a good day, I'm buying lunch" and he did.
One of the fellows asked him why he was in the good mood and he replied something to the effect "well fellows, you known my father had a lot of land and then lost it all in the depression. One of my goals has always been to get it all back and this morning I signed a contract to buy back the last piece".
That's Putin, Russia lost a lot of territory with the breakup of the old USSR and he's hell bent on getting it all back, including the countries that joined NATO.
