Once that option disappeared and Biden began re establishing stronger ties with Western Europe and unite NATO Putin had to act
Putin is hedging his bet that NATO and the USA won’t interfere militarily and he is banking on sanctions to wither away once Europe runs out of low cost natural gas
I think he has underestimated the west
