Missouri does not produce enough quality football players for Mizzou to prosper recruiting only in state.
Gary Pinkel went to Texas to find talent (he in fact had as many coaches recruiting Texas as Missouri). Pinkel publicly stated that it took as long as five years for Mizzou recruiters to develop a good enough rapport with some Texas high school coaches that the high school coaches allowed the recruiters to talk to their best prospects.
When Mizzou moved to the SEC, Pinkel moved virtually all of the coaches who recruited Texas to Georgia and Alabama.
The Boycote episode happened in November of Mizzou's fourth season in the SEC. Pinkel was replaced by Odom. The latter moved recruiters back to Texas. That essentially amounted to starting over. The bottom line is the recruiters were in Georgia and Florida just long enough to start to build a rapport, were pulled out before then could enjoy the benefit of three or four years of building relationships and sent back to Texas where they largely had to start over.
The Boycote was part of a campus wide campaign that alleged radical discrimination was alive, well and practiced at Mizzou and in Columbia. One never sees a post about the damage that did to recruiting. A related example is there was a wire service story that Herman (who had enjoyed a lot of success at Houston) asked his mentor Urban Meyer if he should pursue the Mizzou job and Meyer told him to just flat stay away.
How many black kids heard how many stories from recruiters from other schools about life as a black student/player at Mizzou. How many black parents were told stories of what life would be life for their son at Mizzou by recruiters from other schools and decided no they didn't want their son to have to face that.
I am not arguing that Odom was a great, even a good recruiter, but there were some other factors that contributed to the not a lot of talent situation that are never mentioned in these discussions.
