Some very interesting games yesterday, mostly went as I thought they would, with one huge exception. This is going to be an excellent SEC season with great depth, even the bottom 4-5 teams can be dangerous on a given night.
1. Biggest shocker was Florida going to TAMU and beating (then) #25 TAMU in double OT. Didn’t see that one coming at all. Amazing road win. What made it even more stunning was they did it with their leading scorer out for the season with an injury, and they came from 19 down in the 3rd quarter. TAMU is reeling now. They are off to an 0-3 start in conference play, and they have to play @ #1 SC on Thursday, which means 0-4. If they can’t beat a depleted Florida team at home, they aren’t going to beat SC on the road. You have to wonder what’s wrong with TAMU, in HOF coach Gary Blair’s last season of an incredible career.
2. SC handled Kentucky easily at home in a top 25 match up, 74-54. Kentucky played them tough early, it was tied at the end of the 1st quarter, then SC blew the game open by outscoring them 46-21 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Kentucky’s AA Ryne Howard went 2-14 from the field, as SC held UK to 30% shooting as a team. And as expected, SC pounded them on the boards, 55-37. I think all we did was get SC angry.
3. #7 Tennessee took care of business on the road at Old Miss, led 39-21 at half on the way to a 70-58 win, ending the Rebels 13 game winning streak.
4. #13 LSU took apart Auburn on the road, 76-48, whipping them 26-8 in the first quarter and never looking back. Don’t look at the comparative scores Mizzou and LSU had with Auburn, it isn’t pretty. LSU, on the road, held them to 24% FG shooting, 7% from 3s (1-13), and pounded them on the boards, 50-35. Yikes. I thought at home Auburn might have put up a little more of a fight.
5. In an amazing game, #15 Georgia won at home over Alabama, 72-68. But you had to see this game to believe it. Alabama, one of the bottom 5 teams in the SEC, crushed Georgia in the first half, led them 48-29 at half on the road. I thought it was over at that point. Then Georgia came storming back, outscored them 21-8 in the 3rd and 22-12 in the 4th to win by 4. Really fun game to watch.
6. And in a ho hum game, Miss St beat Vandy at home 70-63. An improved Vandy team was coming off a big home with over Arkansas.
