With Christmas just five days away, health officials are warning the Omicron variant could send Covid cases skyrocketing to new levels nationwide.
New York, once considered the epicenter in the earlier days of the pandemic, set a record for new cases for the third straight day on Sunday.
The rapid spread of Omicron has led to a whole new round of closures for restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and Broadway shows.
Boston is the latest major U.S. city to require proof of vaccination for indoor dining, gyms, theaters, and sports venues.
The mayor of Washington, D.C. announced today the city would reinstate its indoor mask mandate, and close schools for two days to allow families to pick up self-test kits.
Many cities are once again seeing massive testing lines, as the demand spikes before holiday gatherings.

World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recommended delaying or canceling holiday events today due to the spread of Omicron, including among the vaccinated.
"There is now consistent evidence that omicron is spreading significantly faster than the delta variant. And it's more likely that people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 could be infected or re-infected,” he said.
Tedros says leaders and individuals will face tough decisions over the coming days and weeks. "In some cases, that will mean canceling or delaying events," he said. "But an event canceled is better than a life canceled."
There is major concern that holiday travel will speed up the spread of Omicron. The TSA has screened more than 2 million people a day for the last four days, as holiday travel bounces back to nearly pre-pandemic levels.
Health officials are urging Americans to get booster shots as soon as they are eligible, to get the best protection against the new variant.
