people by the flu per year, why have we never had flu lockdowns, mandatory masking and mandatory vaccines for the flu?

Could you please give a link supporting your assertion?

fwiw, one problem with flu vaccines is that the flu mutates far more rapidly than coronaviruses do and they have to guess at what strains may be prevalent in a given year and they sometimes guess wrong.

Strains have far greater differences amongst themselves than "variants" do.
