Probation is serious and meaningful to programs and administrators that care about running a clean program. Auburn is not one of those programs. What this creates in reality is a situation where additional violations uncovered during this 4 year probation window is a situation where doling out a 'death penalty' will be appropriate. The NCAA will avoid that at all costs, so Auburn was just granted a 4 year window where should they want to they can cheat without repercussion because the NCAA will make every attempt possible to not re-engage them in an investigation.
ku did that twice recently, where immediately following being handed a multiple year probation there were a whole bunch of obvious and blatant public violations that simply got no acknowledgement from the NCAA because to do so would have necessitated handing ku a 'death penalty'. So they actually benefited by being on probation because nobody at ku cares if they cheat or how they run the program to try and be successful. Auburn is the same way.
