Heading into the last week of the season, it looks like 5 SEC teams are in real good shape to make the tournament, but 3 others who just 2 weeks ago looked like they could get an at large bid and put the SEC up to 8 bids, are falling fast. In the last 2 weeks Arkansas RPI has dropped from 36 to 46, Ole Miss from 39 to 50, and TAMU from 40 to 49. You can’t say those three teams havnt had their chances, but they just couldn’t come up with key wins.

Here are today’s RPI rankings for the contending SEC teams:

7 Kentucky
15 Florida
21 Tennessee
22 Miss St
38 SC
46 Arkansas
49 TAMU
50 Ole Miss

With a general cutoff around a 45 RPI to get an at large bid, those last three teams are now projected to be out by the most recent bracketology on Volleytalk.

Problem is there is not much any team can do to enhance their resume in the last week of play. TAMU plays Missouri twice at home this weekend, and with our RPI of 206, it hurts them just to step on the court with us. Complicating their situation, they are 12-14 overall, and need to beat us twice just to get to the .500 mark that makes them eligible for a bid. And they have lost 9 of their last 10, including an awful home loss to Auburn. So they probably won’t make the tourney, either way.

Ole Miss closes with 2 on the road at Alabama (RPI 170), so they have no opportunity to improve their position even if they win both.

Arkansas has a slight chance, since they play a single game at SC, at least a team with a pulse who will likely get an at large bid. It’s a must win for them. Even a win probably doesn’t get them in.

And LSU, the most underachieving team in the conference, is still in the discussion believe it or not, but a very long shot, with an RPI of 61. They close with 2 on the road at Georgia, and they are in the same situation as TAMU; with a 12-13 record, they need to sweep Georgia just to finish with a .500 or better record.

Looks like the SEC will get 2 national seeds, with Kentucky in the 6-8 range, and Florida in the 14-16 range. The Gators can really help secure a seed by at least splitting at Kentucky. Tennessee, who we play on Wednesday in our final home game, has played themselves out of seed contention the last 2 weeks, as their RPI has fallen from 12 to 21.
