If they wanted to render it truly inoperable they could remove the firing pin. They do so much with CGI anyway, why risk it.

It always astounds me when some actor pulls the trigger on a semiautomatic handgun to have it go "click" on an empty chamber. So he/she pulls the trigger a few more times and it goes "click, click".

Ain't happening unless the slide gets pulled back to charge the action.
