There's two distinct categories of soundtracks

On the one hand, you have soundtracks like Forrest Gump, The Big Chill, Dazed and Confused, etc., where they just compiled a ton of songs that were already hits into a compilation. That's effective, but easy. You're just making a "greatest hits" compilation that is popular already.
Then you have Soundtracks that compile music that really sets the mood of the film, either with unique, original compositions or at the very least under-utilized, unknown songs from existing artists.
I think that second scenario stands the test of time a little better, and is more difficult to pull off but when it works it's leagues above method #1. This is Soundtracks like Singles, Saturday Night Fever, Purple Rain, Magnolia, etc.
Method #2 makes you immediately think of the movie when you hear one of those songs. Method #1, the movie is WAY down the list of association when you h'ear those already popular songs. No one thinks "Hey thats the song from Forrest Gump" when they hear CCRs Fortunate Son.
