I don't see how they harm communities. In fact, they seem like a very solid way to fix several problems... make affordable housing, reduce energy usage and greenhouse gases, reduce our nation's energy dependence, reduce risk from storms and fires and reduce issues from utility power outages.
Earth homes are outlawed in St. Louis county and elsewhere. Apparently repurposing discarded trash is prohibited almost everywhere, but this community found a place without such restrictions:
