because virus can reside in upper respiratory (nasal) passages but antibodies prevent lower respiratory (lung) and systemic infection.
Governor Abbott was vaccinated.
He was asymptotic.
He was being tested daily, which goes against CDC guidelines for asymptotic, vaccinated individuals.
So how did he get infected?
The Texas Republican, who has signed legislation banning vaccine and mask mandates in his state, gave what he described as a “standing room only event in Collin County” Monday night. Photos of the event show few people wearing masks at the indoor gathering.
So, he exposed himself to unvaccinated, unmasked Texans in a crowded indoor space - fully ignoring all recommended parameters. Nonetheless, despite virus residing in his upper respiratory passages, he isn’t affected thanks to the vaccine.
