but in the aggregate, I think it’s fine for the government to know how many people of different races, different sexes, different sexual preferences etc. are living in a city, a state or a nation.

The problem of course is that your information is almost certainly not private. I imagine that whatever information anyone sends to the government about… Anything, gun ownership for example, will not remain private.
