Your grandfather could have easily been put on drugs that would have gradually suppressed his respiratory system and killed any pain he was in thereby letting him more or less drift off. There is nothing wrong with that especially if he's end stage terminal.
I assume it was many years ago when he had lung cancer and being cognizant of whom I'm addressing it was probably the 18th century.
When people are end stage and I lived through it with my father, to treat them like an old poodle who's gotten to be a burden doesn't say much for us. Where is your grandparents pain now ?
