To paraphrase - money and women were the basis for starting an entire new religion. I think you’d find that Luthers complaint was not against the use of indulgences, but the abuse of indulgences.

As Fulton Sheen once said, the reformers were right about what was wrong, but they were wrong about what was right. There was nothing wrong with the way we were thinking the problem was the way we were living.
