a lot of energy. I'm not sure how it compares to printing money or normal EFT. The main reason to get rid of it (or regulate the heck out of it) would be its use in criminal activity, sort of why some want to get rid of $50 and $100 bills in the US. The 500 euro note is nicknamed the "bin Laden" because of its use in criminal activity.
EDIT: The eurozone stopped production of 500-euro notes in 2019, but they still make 200-euro notes
