My company was audited by the IRS about 15 years ago. The two Revenue Agents they sent were both very impressive in their knowledge. But I was mostly impressed with their level of concern over security with private tax records. It's was honestly a little too much, IMO.
I got to talk them about it, and they had some interesting things to say. They were basically told if information got out and it came from them, they would be fired immediately and would probably be brought up on criminal charges. And they were told it didn't matter if it was intentional, accidental, or resulted or didn't result from their carelessness. They were told the IRS is just looking to make an example out of somebody for this.
Now that only applies to the low-level scrubs of course. It has no bearing on the upper levels of the agency who are certainly not shy about using the agency as a political weapon. But the double standard is interesting nonetheless.
