Trump, always putting America first, wanted Europe to buy

natural gas from the US, which I understand is an ally of Europe, and not from Russia, who everyone says is the enemy of the US and Europe. Remember NATO, and the the US funding all of that protection but Europe not paying their fair share? They want the US to protect them from Russia (the entire reason for NATO's existence) and yet do a pipeline deal with them? The US has vast reserves of natural gas.

Now Europe will be more reliant on Russia - Russia will have more leverage over Europe.

Official approval of the pipeline at EU level has been blocked at EU level, but there is ongoing litigation over whether the EU could even block the pipeline if it wanted to.
