The electorate was divided 70-30, and both sides were and still are very bitter about the issue. So it is bitter, and it's divided. Also known as "bitterly divided." They didn't say it was "evenly" divided.
The media is plenty biased and plenty inaccurate. This is not one of those times.
But it figures that you wouldn't recognize that through the foggy, clouded lenses of your mind.
