hired back in 90 I joined the union because I came from a union family and the KC district was so screwed up that I thought the added protection could come in handy.
In my second year, a number of us teachers decided to give some of our time a few nights a week and on Saturdays to try some interventions for our seriously at-risk students. Our building rep got the plan nixed because the district was not going to pay the teachers for their time. This was planned by the teachers who never planned to ask the district for any compensation we just needed the building opened for us for a few hours each week. The union opposed any plans that did not pay teachers for their time regardless of who proposed it. Myself and about five others quit the union that week and I have not been a member since.
Teachers' unions are about politics and power. They couldn't care less about educating children
