outdoors were useless. Good airflow is the best deterrent to this and any airborne virus. Sunshine also helps restrict virus transmission.
Masks originally were to calm the masses by leading them to believe that they had some control over the uncontrollable. They soon discovered a second use for them, they were a way to get the masses to control one another so there was much less pushback over government controls.
