Watch the movie with Robert Downey Jr., it goes into some of this and is fairly accurate. Downey does a great job as Chaplin.

I never do understand why actors who benefit so much from a Free Economy and society seem to want to usher in a System that would take away their freedom and drastically reduce their ability to earn a living....although Chaplin claimed to be against Communist systems and idea's.
