The first major divide is religion vs atheism. I'll pick Christianity to fill in for religion.

Natural law is about property rights. Assume the default position of atheism for now. No one has a right to your property except to which you consent. Your body is also your property. It is as basic as it gets.

From there we can build a moral code. Initiating any form of aggression against a person or their property is violating natural law. Initiating is the key word. As defense of your own person or property is defending your rights under natural law. By extension the following would be crimes: murder, assault, rape, theft (fraud and other means), etc. Any laws that are created that violated violated person's property rights violate natural law. Forced conscription being one.

Christianity throws a bit of a monkey wrench into the concept, but only in how it is interpreted. As a product of creation, the Earth is not the property of any human, but God. Our bodies are not our property, but God's. So as guests on God's property, God can make the rules in regards to his property, or we can be invited to leave (death).

In the Garden of Eden story, everything was fine until Adam & Eve decided to violate God's consent on what they could do in his property.

They showed that they didn't follow the basic concept of natural rights. So they were escorted out of the temple area and God withdrew his presence. Then the story continues on with other examples leading to 10 commandments, then still having to be expanded with another 600 or so since they still did not get the basic natural law.

Incorporating both Christian and atheist world views:
Now today, natural law is pretty much ignored and replaced with government created law. And that just compounds the issue. People create these government laws to specifically violate the natural law and use overwhelming force against defense.
