After Mizzou graduation and a losing lottery number ---called in first 2 months --turned down Air Force OCS and an opportunity to fly F-4s because a 6 yr 4 month commitment. Would have been a career choice although flying F-4s (Phantom jets) would have been fun . Wanted Navy as only 3 yrs 4 mos but it was backed up and just got drafted
At the induction station in Stl at the Mart Bldg they had us count off by 3s. Twos were drafted as Marines. I was a 3. Hooray
One thing I never will forget was the reception station talk at FLW for all us draftees . I was in the front of the room when the Captain finished his talk said they were giving us a last chance to turn in any weapons, drugs or other illegal stuff we might have. Probably 200 guys in the room. When I got to the back of the room 2 55 gallon drums were completely full to overflowing with dope , handguns and porno. Who would bring a gun??? Gave me an idea of what I was in for. BTW I had nothing to contribute to the barrels
