If memory serves, after Norm’s retirement, the Chancellor set up a large search committee to recommend a replacement. It had students, faculty, alums, etc. It included Alden & Sunvold. Reportedly everyone on the committee opted for Snyder except Sunvold. His choice was Self.
The search committee met, made it’s choice (Snyder), and Snyder was hired in the spring. The following basketball season Self went something like 26-2 at Oral Roberts after the season was over moved to Illinois.
Had things been a bit different (I.e. Snyder passed on the job), The arch villain of KU basketball might have been the Tiger’s coach.
