Communism has been around for over 2,500 years

I have seen it argued that human society was communist during the hunter gatherer / tribal phase. That phase lasted over 200,000 years. One reason was that Nomadic people can only really own as much property as they can carry when the group relocates to greener pastures.
There were periodic episodes of communism during the city state era in ancient greece. I have seen it argued that Sparta was a communist society for example.
I am not very well read in the subject of communism. But it is probably a mistake to reduce the concept of communism to what Marx wrote back in the 1860s.
