I was offered an appointment by Sen. Symington in 1972 and I turned it down. My family was heavily involved in democrat party politics, my Dad was a District Committeeman and My Grandpa knew Symington. I assumed the appointment was a political favor to the family in order to keep me out of the draft. The reputation of the military being at low ebb, I figured I had better options. One year later, I drew a short straw in the draft lottery and Uncle Sam came calling anyway.
