With a total enlistment of almost half a million, the chances of dying are very low, about 1 in 1400.

When you come from poor families it is a great way to get out of poverty. I have two family members who joined right out of high school and stayed in for 20+ years one retired a full bird from the Air Force and the other a Lieutenant from the Navy. Both got multiple degrees while in the service, now have very nice retirements and have moved on to second careers.

The military is not for all but for many it is a great career choice.
