This week we stayed at #25 in the AVCA poll, after beating Georgia twice. Now we start a crucial stretch which will define where we get seeded for the NCAA tournament, where there will be only 48 teams qualifying instead of 64. Only 17 at large bids are available and it’s conceivable if we don’t finish strong that we may not get a bid this year.

We are 10-4 in the SEC (and season, with no non conference games). But we are just 2-4 against the top half of the conference and 8-0 against the worst five SEC teams, and 3 of those 8 wins went 5 sets. Our “signature” win is I guess against Arky in the fall, which I’m afraid isn’t going to count for squat with the selection committee. Arky is 11-5 but has had a very easy schedule...they close with Florida, Tennessee, and SC, and could easily go 0-6 in those matches. We have not beaten a single team with a winning record yet except Arky.

We need some wins against teams with a pulse, badly, to make it to the NCAA tournament.

We finish @ SC, @ Florida (to be rescheduled), and home to TAMU and Miss St. Three of those teams have winning records and are in the top half of the conference. Miss St is at 4-8.

We need at least a split, if not a sweep, against SC Friday and Saturday. They are as good as Tennessee, who we went 0-2 against. They have swept Bama, Miss St, and Auburn, just went 0-2 against TAMU, both 4 sets, and split with Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia. Their wins against Florida and Tennessee are way better than our best wins of the season.

We will need our A games this weekend, and I’m relieved to see Fuentes back at setter, hope she stays there the rest of the year.
